1. Wallpapers: They slow your whole system down, so if you're willing to compromise, have a basic plain one instead!

2. Drivers: Update your hardware drivers as frequently as possible. New drivers tend to increase system speed especially in the case of graphics cards, their drivers are updated by the manufacturer very frequently!

3. Minimizing: If you want to use several programs at the same time then minimize those you are not using. This helps reduce the overload on RAM.

7. Faster Start-Menu Access: Go to the Start menu and select Run. Now type Regedit and hit Enter. The Registry Editor will appear on the screen. Now, open the folder HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. You should see a MenuShowDelay value. If you don't then do the following: right click on a blank space in the right pane and select New\String. Change the name in the new value to MenuShowDelay. Now that we have the MenuShowDelay value, double click on it and enter 0 in the value data field. This sets the start menu delay to 0 milliseconds.

8. Resolutions: If you are willing to do anything for faster performance from your PC, then try lowering your display resolution. The lower it is, the faster your PC.

9. Turn off Active Desktop: win98.jpg Go to your Display Properties and switch to the Web tab. Uncheck View My Active Desktop As a Web Page. Since the Active Desktop option under Windows 98 uses a lot of system resources, this option can have a dramatic effect on the speed of the whole system.

How To Change Keyboard Language In Windows XP

If you want to learn how to change your keyboard language while using Windows XP, you come to the right article. It's fairly easy once you know how it's done and by the end of this article you will.Of course, the first step is to sit in front of your turned on computer which I assume you are since you're reading this article. Now that you're sitting comfortably, you can begin to change your keyboard language.

1. Click the Start button at the bottom left corner of the screen. This will present you with a long two column menu. On the right menu, click the option Control Panel.

2. There are 2 options in which the Control Panel icons may be presented: catergory or classic. You want to be in Classic view. You can see at the left side of the Control Panel which view you're currently in. If it says Switch To Category View, it means you're now in Classic view which is what you want. If it says Switch to Classic View, click that link.

3. In The Control panel, click the Regional and Language Options icon. This will open a small dialog. You're about halfway to changing your keyboard language.

4. In this new dialog, you will see 3 tabs. The middle one reads Languages. Click on that.

5. In the top half of this tab, you will see a button which reads Details. Click on that button. A new dialog window will open.

6. In The lower half of the new dialog window, you will see and Add button. This will open yet another dialog window.

7. At the top half of this screen, you will see a Combo under the title of Input Language. Choose the language you wish to add and click OK twice.

8. Look at the bottom of your screen in what is known as the System Tray (bottom right corner), you will see an indication of the current language you're using (EN signifies English). You can now switch between the different language you've installed by pressing Alt+Shift keys.

There you have it. You've successfully changed your keyboard language.

By Default a feature called Sticky Keys will be enabled on your PC. To disable this feature follow these steps:

1. Press SHIFT 5 times consecutively. The StickyKeys box will pop up.

4. Uncheck the items in this window and click OK.

Disable Sticky Keys on a Default Installation

This tip will enable you to create buttons in your quick launch toolbar to quickly and easily shut down and/or restart your computer.

1. Right click on your desktop, scroll to new..... shortcut
2. In the location line, for shutdown type; shutdown -s -t 0 ie: shutdown(space)-s(space)-t(space)number zero
3. Name the shortcut "Shut Down PC" or whatever u want
4. The new shortcut is now sitting on your desktop, right click on it and go to properties, then click on "change icon". Click OK, then pick a suitable icon, there is a red "off button" icon available, then click apply and ok.
5. Now drag the icon from your desktop into the quick launch toolbar, resize the toolbar so all the buttons are visible, then delete the shortcut from your desktop.

To create a restart button the location line should read shutdown -r -t 0 name it restart pc and give it a suitable icon for restart.

Now you can shut down or restart your pc in 1 mouse click without having to go through the startup menu.

The Windows XP user interface has some learning features, whereby it will customize itself to fit your computing style. One of the most obvious examples of this is the frequently used programs section on the bottom left side of the start menu, where shortcuts for the programs you have most recently used are displayed. Normally, this section only has room for about six program icons, but it's a fast and handy way to access your software, so why not add more?

To increase the amount of icons in the frequently used programs list right click on the start menu and choose 'properties.' Select the 'customize' button to the right of the 'start menu' option.

Change the 'select an icon size for programs' option to 'small icons' and in the 'number of programs on start menu' counter below, enter a new value based on how many icons you would like to see. Realistically, depending on your desktop resolution you are not likely to be able to fit more than 15 or so icons here, but enter a higher number if you wish. The system will cut off what it can't display. Hit 'ok' and enjoy your newly useful start menu.

2. Remove the Frequently Used Programs List From the Start Menu

In complete contradiction to the previous tip, this will show you how to wipe out the frequently used programs section of the start menu altogether. The trouble with this feature is that it only shows the programs you have last used. You have no control over it other than to use your programs frequently. The 'pinned' programs section above the frequently used programs section of the start menu, on the other hand, displays whatever shortcuts you want it to.

To obtain more space for pinned programs, you can remove the frequently used programs completely.

To do this open Regedit:
Navigate to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer'.

Create a new DWORD value called 'NoStartMenuMFUprogramsList' and give it the value '1'.

Reboot or restart the explorer process to enable this tip. Now you have much more start menu space to drag and drop your own shortcuts.

Feed Demon and RSS Bandit are good choices, but an RSS ticker might be even better at delivering headline news to political news junkies.

GOP supporters should look to the free Election 2008 Political Ticker, an attractive ticker for tracking blog, video, and news feeds. Sources lean mostly Republican, though there are three token sites for Democrats and the ability to subscribe to Google feeds you build by keyword. Unfortunately, the ticker doesn't let you add your own feeds, an omission that inconveniences users from all parties.

Titlebar Ticker is a homelier, but more open freeware ticker that's coupled with a traditional RSS-reading app. Titlebar Ticker may not be a looker, but its trump card is being able to read news on any active window. You'll also be able to freely add and organize your own RSS feeds, though other customizations are thin and there's no preview window for making changes to the ticker's skin.

This free presidential election desktop widget from Wikio isn't a ticker, but it is another option for pulling down election-specific news if you're running Windows Vista.

Looking for a simple-to-use, quick-performing RSS feed reader? This pared down freebie may fit the bill.

RiverGate RSS Reader isn't fancy and lacks extras that, admittedly, some of its free competitors offer. So why bother with it? For one, using it is as smooth and zippy as other readers can be sluggish. It offers the basics in the familiar three-pane e-mail client interface that so many feed readers rely on. It comes preloaded with a variety of security-related feeds, plus one innocuous celebrity gossip/news feed, but adding feeds was a simple process in our tests. The reader responded quickly and performed well for us.

Besides performing well, the simplicity of RiverGate is appealing. RiverGate RSS Reader is a good place to start for RSS novices, and for anyone who wants just a basic reader without a lot of confusing extra features and options.

If you've used a computer in the last decade, no doubt you've come face to face with the Google Toolbar. A Dell computer I bought a few years back came with both the toolbar and Google's desktop search program pre-installed. Also, an obscene amount of software comes with it as an optional add-on in the installation process since Google pays referrers a fat $1 per new user.

Next month, Google's toolbar turn eight years old and to celebrate, the company has launched a brand-new version for Internet Explorer, which brings it up to speed with last month's beta release for Firefox users.

Of all of the features, my personal favorite is the updated autofill system. This lets you have separate autofill profiles, which can be changed on the fly. This is useful if you're planning to use the toolbar at work, since you can keep one set of information for personal use (e.g. usernames, addresses, phone numbers), and another for business. It can also follow you from browser to browser as long as you're logged in with your Google credentials.

Other big changes include the introduction of gadgets, which users can affix to the top of their browser and summon with a click. It also throws in Web bookmark sync, and the updated sharing button, which lets you send entire pages to friends via SMS or without having to use an e-mail account.

Google's put together a pretty neat shot of how the toolbar has progressed since its introduction, which I've pasted below.

Google celebrates eight years of toolbar with new IE version

It slows down your browsing. It makes some Web sites inaccessible for no discernible reason. It doesn't even offer you any xiao long bao or pu'er tea for your troubles. But if you want to know what life behind the Great Firewall of China is like, then the Firefox plug-in China Channel is the cheapest and fastest way to experience using the Internet in China without actually being there. After installation, getting to experience Web surfing the way the Chinese do isn't hard at all. Users have three ways to activate China Channel: via the China Channel toolbar, a navigation bar button that you must drag and drop onto the bar to get access to, and a status bar button. The buttons function by opening a menu, from which you choose to switch from None to the China Channel. Much like the IE Tab extension, the page will then render as if your IP address is inside China.

The toolbar is interesting for a slightly different workflow that results in a Web page that informs you of your IP address and its country of origin. Choose the China Channel from the drop down, and then hit the big red Go button. With China Channel activated, the page will declare that the plug-in has been activated. Switch back to None and refresh the page, and it changes to reflect your proxy server-free surfing experience.

Explore the Web from China--without leaving home

If you've ever had a hard drive die on you, or had your computer stolen, you've probably come to appreciate--and possibly shake your fist at--computer back up. Bad things happen, which is what makes utilities like FlickrDown so darn useful.

This small Windows application provides a simple way to pull down a large portion of your Flickr photos at a time. You just give it your Flickr credentials, pick which sets of photos you want to download and it does the rest--putting them in tightly organized file folders on your local machine. Sure you could just download the original of each shot from Flickr's pages, but that doesn't scale.

The app requires at least version 2.0 of Microsoft's .NET runtime, which you might already have installed if you're a user of Paint.NET. Also worth noting is that the tool cannot pull down any videos you've uploaded. If you want to do that you should check out a tool called Orbit++. There's a good tutorial on how to do that here.

In a time when Yahoo is heavily promoting its "open strategy" Flickr is not quite there yet. The service still does not offer FTP access for its members (both free and paid) to be able to pull down full quality versions of their shots en masse, however the API has allowed for several workarounds like this that--unfortunately--require extra software.

FlickrDown lets you archive all your Flickr photos

This is not a flashback to the chart-defying tricks of ambient house music progenitors The Orb, although if you have their music you can use this Orb to play it anywhere. No, this Orb melds module-based personal portals with your hard drive's media content and lets you stream it to almost any Internet-connected handheld device, including iPhones.

The setup will probably be challenging to users who aren't familiar with how to open ports, but, fortunately, there's plenty of help in Orb's user forums. Once you're good to go, the program launches in your browser and you can choose whether you want your video module to be front and center, how wide your music module should be, and if you really need yet another weather widget. Uploading your media files is a time-consuming and tedious process that could be greatly improved upon. After that, you can "MyCast" them, which is Orb's name for webcasting. If your home PC has coaxial access, you can stream television, as well as photos, video files, and music.

By circumventing the need to reload media files on a second machine and having the handheld connection, Orb seems pretty nifty. The system requirements, though, are stringent, and the upload process is slow-going, making this a useful product with room for improvement

Easily create passwords to your specifications with this password-generation tool. Password Miner's dialog interface is easy to master. Operating Password Miner is as easy as falling down. Enter a master password, a URL or keyword, and a username. Click a few options to set password length and type. Then press the generate button to get a unique password.

Where this app misleads is to claim the passwords are random. If so, they couldn't be recreated by entering the same master, user, and URL. What this program does is use an algorithm to make a password based on the seed data. That makes it a program that will help users remember only their Master Password. Enter it, the URL, and username anytime you need to see Password Miner's recommended password for that site and user.

The app takes an extra step by storing URLs when requested. Passwords can include small or capital letters, numbers, and symbols. Password length is limited to a 1000-character maximum, although I can only confirm that passwords of less than 20 characters work. Having a portable version would be great for a USB key toolbox, but it's a good tool even as it is.

Automating repetitive Firefox tasks is one way to save your fingers from undue stress, and iMacros for Firefox is a great way to do it. From a sidebar you can toggle on and off, you can run, record, and edit macros. Recording is as simple as pressing a button before starting and clicking another to stop. For more advanced tasks you can turn to a set of demos, but the Web site wiki and step-by-step tutorials were easy enough to follow.

While iMacros can theoretically be used to input passwords, best security practices dictate that you shouldn't. Being able to save macros as bookmarks and being able to share them via e-mail and Delicious are great features, though the plug-in lacks a scheduler. Unfortunately, macros can only run in active tabs, so when you run lengthier ones plan on a long break.
