Singer Katy Perry performs on stage during Z100's Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden on December 12, 2008 in New York City.
On Monday, People erroneously reported that Katy Perry had warned the audience at her Los Angeles concert not to date her ex, Travis McCoy of the Gym Class Heroes. Given that Jezebel and many other sites had carried the actual quote, People's error is pretty dang embarrassing. Katy had actually just been joking around about her doppelganger, indie film sweetheart Zooey Deschanel, who recently became engaged to Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard:
Girls if you feel me, if you've ever dated the lead singer from Death Cab For Cutie ... it's not like that, I'm not engaged ... this one goes out to him...To all of the my upcoming relationships – one foot in, one foot out. He wants the milk but he never wants to buy the cow. Katy posted in her blog about the incident to further clear things up. She wrote:
I didn't say that. I would never be so tacky. I go to great lengths to keep it about the musit....I never mentioned Travis or his lovely band. as they are still friends of mine.
I don't care if you make fun of me, my music my zits, my cellulite or my bad choice of clothing...I really don't. Just have some soul, and don't LIE. I am not asking to be exempt from the media, I am just asking for some fucking fact checking.
Good for Katy! For those of you who think she got upset over nothing, realize this: while People focuses on celebrities and hairstyles, its readers understand it to be a reputable news source that has somehow managed to evade the "tabloid" moniker. Were this quote published on some gossipy blog, it might have been different for Katy, but for erroneous information to be reported on one of the most influential entertainment sites could be damaging and hurtful.
